The Lord has impressed upon my spirit this week the word “abomination.” The Bible teaches that many things are an abomination to the Lord. In fact, we can say generally that all wickedness and evil are an abomination to Him.
Proverbs 15:
9 ¶ The way of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD, But He loves him who pursues righteousness.
While it is true that all sin, evil, and wickedness are an abomination to Him, it is worthwhile to spend some time understanding some of the specific things that God lists in His word as an abomination. Today’s list is in no way exhaustive, but it speaks to many things that have become acceptable in today’s culture.
Abomination Defined
The word “abomination” is defined in Websters as an abhorrence or anything that is detestable or regarded with disgust, hatred, or loathing. To abhor something is to despise it.
In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word for “abomination” is “tow’ ebah” (pronounced “to-ay-baw’ “), which means a disgusting abhorrence. In the New Testament, the Greek word for “abomination” is “bdelugma” (pronounced “bdel’-oog-mah”), which again means detestable.
So, when we say something is an abomination to the Lord, we are talking about things that He detests and regards with disgust. These are things He loathes and abhors. Yes, these are things our Lord hates.
Let us go through some of the things the Bible tells us that the Lord despises.
Seven Abominations
Proverbs 6:
16 There are six things which the LORD hates, Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him:
17 Haughty eyes, a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood,
18 A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that run rapidly to evil,
19 A false witness [who] utters lies, And one who spreads strife among brothers.
Proverbs 16:
5 ¶ Everyone who is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD; Assuredly, he will not be unpunished.
The seven abominations of Proverbs 6 are:
- Haughty eyes, referring to pride and arrogance
- Lying
- Murder, especially abortion
- Wicked hearts
- All evil
- False witnesses
- One who spreads strife among brothers.
Sadly, these things are becoming more acceptable in society today, as pride and arrogance are commonplace, as are lying and deception, and murder. It seems every day there is a new report of a shooting killing innocent lives.
Wicked hearts and darkness abound, as do false witnesses, but what jumps out at me is spreading strife among brothers. Families are under attack, and many spread strife among brothers. God considers strife among brothers an abomination because the family is precious to Him.
It is startling how many of this list of abominations are common in our world. The fact that abominations abound today is a sign of the end times and Jesus’ return to bring an end to the evil.
The Proverbs 6 abominations are not the only ones listed in the Bible.
Divination and Witchcraft
Deuteronomy 18:
10 “There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, one who uses divination, one who practices witchcraft, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer,
11 or one who casts a spell, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead.
12 “For whoever does these things is detestable to the LORD; and because of these detestable things the LORD your God will drive them out before you.
Remember, the word “detestable” is part of the definition of “Abomination.” In fact, in the KJV, the word used in verse 12 is “abomination.”
Divination means the attempt to foretell future events via omens, not to be confused with prophecy, which is a gift of the Holy Spirit. Fortune tellers, palm readers, and the like are taking part in divination, usually for money, and what some may consider a harmless form of entertainment at the county fair is really an abomination to the Lord.
Witchcraft is defined as the use of sorcery or magic, including communication with evil spirits. It includes what is known as necromancy, defined as communicating with spirits of the dead for the purposes of revealing the future.
Verse 12 makes it clear that whoever practices such things is detestable to the Lord. If you or your children encounter anyone who practices in this area, ask the Lord to drive them away from you.
Sexual Sin
Sexual sin is another area where the Lord has defined abominations.
Leviticus 18:
22 ‘You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination.
23 ‘Also you shall not have intercourse with any animal to be defiled with it, nor shall any woman stand before an animal to mate with it; it is a perversion.
24 ‘Do not defile yourselves by any of these things; for by all these the nations which I am casting out before you have become defiled.
Deuteronomy 22:
5 ¶ “A woman shall not wear man’s clothing, nor shall a man put on a woman’s clothing; for whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD your God.
1st Corinthians 6:
9 ¶ Or do you not know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals,
10 nor thieves, nor [the] covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, shall inherit the kingdom of God.
11 And such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, and in the Spirit of our God.
This passage from 1st Corinthians 6 gives hope that those who commit abominations can be washed, sanctified, and justified in the name of Jesus, and in the Spirit of our God. When we are born again, we repent of all sin, and we ask the Lord to change our hearts and to strengthen us to avoid all sin.
Abomination of Desolation
Perhaps there is no more abominable sin than the one that will be committed by the antichrist during the Tribulation, as prophesied by Daniel and by Jesus Himself.
Daniel 9:
27 “And he will make a firm covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of abominations [will come] one who makes desolate, even until a complete destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who makes desolate.” (NASB)
The word “desolate” means to stun, devastate, stupefy, amaze, or astonish. People will be stunned by the action of the antichrist when he claims to be God in the Temple. In Daniel 9:27, the Hebrew word used for “abominations” is “shiqquwts” (pronounced shik-koots), which means disgusting, filthy, and detestable. What the antichrist will do is an abomination to the Lord, just as pride, lies, murder, wickedness, evil, false witness, spreaders of strife, and sexual sinners are.
In Matthew 24, Jesus is describing post-Rapture events when He refers to the Abomination of Desolation, standing in the holy place, a reference to the rebuilt Temple.
Matthew 24:
12 “And because lawlessness is increased, most people’s love will grow cold.
13 “But the one who endures to the end, he shall be saved.
14 “And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world for a witness to all the nations, and then the end shall come.
15 “Therefore when you see the ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand),
16 then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains;
17 let him who is on the housetop not go down to get the things out that are in his house;
18 and let him who is in the field not turn back to get his cloak.
This abomination is setting the stage for the Battle of Armageddon, and so Jesus is warning the remaining Jews to get out of the city and to flee to the mountains, where He will be gathering the elect.
Closing
In Daniel 9:27 there is good news. While the one who makes desolate comes, he will rule only until there comes a complete destruction, one that is decreed. The Lord has decreed that this complete destruction will be poured out on the antichrist by Jesus at the Second Coming. At the Battle of Armageddon, Jesus will defeat all evil, and all abominations to the Lord will be completely destroyed. Praise His name.
Let us pray.
Father God, Thank You for the truth of Your word and the clear definition of abominable things that You despise. Quicken us by the Holy Spirit to avoid these sins as well as those who practice such detestable things. We pray for our fallen world, where abominations have become commonplace. We pray in Jesus’ name for others to turn from these things before the Rapture occurs. Amen.
