Last time we talked about abominations, which we defined as actions that the Lord considers detestable, that is, things that He hates. From pride to deception, to murder, to witchcraft and sexual sin, the Bible is clear that Lord abhors these things and those who practice them. We pointed out that Daniel prophesied that the antichrist would commit the abomination of desolation in the Temple during the midpoint of the seven-year Tribulation period.
Daniel 9:
27 “And he will make a firm covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of abominations [will come] one who makes desolate, even until a complete destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who makes desolate.” (NASB)
The point that stood out to me last week was the phrase “on the wing of abominations” in Daniel 9:27. The Lord re-emphasized to me that as abominations become more commonplace in our world, that we are closer to the Rapture because the antichrist will commit the abomination of desolation “on the wing of abominations.” So, as our society continues to accept abominations such as deception, murder, homosexuality, and other sexual sin, we are taking steps rapidly toward the day the antichrist commits his abomination.
As I prepared for this podcast, news broke of four people dead and 12 injured in Leland, Mississippi at a downtown event associated with a high school homecoming event. Murder is an abomination to the Lord, yet we have murder reported every day. One day soon, the Lord will rapture His church, the Tribulation will begin, and on the wing of increasing abominations, the antichrist will do his thing, and Jesus will come again to put an end to all evil.
The acceleration of abominations, and those who rationalize and accept them as normal, tend to anger me. This begs a question that the Lord asked me this week.
Why the Anger?
This question convicts me. I hate to admit it, but I have been battling anger. It seems to me that our world is in such a dark place that I find myself becoming angry with the abominations that are becoming so commonplace in our society. I get angry when I see or hear those who disregard the truth of God’s word and instead support unsound doctrine to justify abominations like abortion. In fact, I have been waking up in the middle of the night and talking in my sleep. I am notorious for not remembering my dreams, but Nancy tells me that I am usually angry and ready to fight someone. Some nights I even use bad language in my “dream arguments.”
The Lord spoke to me about this kind of righteous indignation recently. Last week, Nancy and I visited my son Will, and his family in Pelham, AL, a suburb of Birmingham. Will played drums on Sunday as part of the worship team at Oak Mountain Presbyterian Church, and as we worshipped, the Lord spoke into my spirit: “What have you to be angry about?”
It was as if the Lord was telling me that these abominations were not against me but against Him. He does not want us to take on anger into our spirits when we see the path of evildoers.
Colossians 3:
8 ¶ But now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, [and] abusive speech from your mouth.
Ephesians 4:
29 Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such [a word] as is good for edification according to the need [of the moment,] that it may give grace to those who hear.
30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.
32 And be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you. (NASB)
So, while some pursue abominations, we are to remain tender-hearted, with no bitterness, wrath, anger, nor clamor. No unwholesome word should proceed from our mouths, but only words that edify or build others up. This means we must avoid insults and condemnations that are common in debates and arguments, especially with respect to politics today.
In the meantime, we are to remember that the wicked will continue in their wickedness, but their future is not bright.
The Wicked Will Act Wickedly
The Lord is saying that we cannot expect to change everyone’s mind. Not all will turn away from evil and repent. He had this word for Daniel when the prophet was trying to understand end times events.
Daniel 12:
8 As for me, I heard but could not understand; so I said, “My lord, what [will be] the outcome of these [events?]”
9 And he said, “Go [your way,] Daniel, for [these] words are concealed and sealed up until the end time.
10 “Many will be purged, purified and refined; but the wicked will act wickedly, and none of the wicked will understand, but those who have insight will understand.
Like Daniel, we are to go our way and not fret these things. The Lord is calling us to have insight to understand. The wicked will act wickedly in the end time. On the other hand, we are to understand the future of evil.
Understand the Future of Evil
To gain the insight the Lord wants us to have, we are to delight ourselves in the Lord.
Psalms 37:
4 Delight yourself in the LORD; And He will give you the desires of your heart.
5 Commit your way to the LORD, Trust also in Him, and He will do it.
6 And He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, And your judgment as the noonday.
7 ¶ Rest in the LORD and wait patiently for Him; Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, Because of the man who carries out wicked schemes.
8 Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; Do not fret, [it leads] only to evildoing.
9 For evildoers will be cut off, But those who wait for the LORD, they will inherit the land.
10 Yet a little while and the wicked man will be no more; And you will look carefully for his place, and he will not be [there.]
11 But the humble will inherit the land, And will delight themselves in abundant prosperity.
12 The wicked plots against the righteous, And gnashes at him with his teeth.
13 The Lord laughs at him; For He sees his day is coming.
We are to cease from anger over the wicked. Verse 13 says the Lord laughs at the wicked because Jesus knows His day is coming. Verses 4-5 tell us instead to delight ourselves in the Lord, commit our way to Him, trust Him, and He will do it.
Verse 7-8 tell us to rest in the LORD and wait patiently for Him. We are not to fret over the wicked because it leads only to evildoing on our part. And verse 9 describes the future of evil: they will be cut off while those of us who wait on the Lord will prosper and inherit the land.
So, God is saying: What have you to be angry about? Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart. Trust Him and He will do it. He will bring forth righteousness as light (verse 6).
Fret Not
Part of this word of the Lord is this: Anger is often in response to fretting. We fret because we forget the authority we have over the power of the enemy. Two weeks ago, we talked about the authority that Jesus has granted us.
Luke 10 (Jesus speaking):
19 “Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall injure you.
20 “Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven.”
My son, Will, likes to ride his bike in the mountains for exercise. Yesterday, he was riding with a friend, who yelled “copperhead.” Will did not see it in time and ran over the serpent. His friend noticed the snake was wrapped around Will’s back wheel and was striking at the wheel. He yelled for Will to drop his bike. The copperhead surely would have bitten Will if his friend had not noticed it. Will jumped off the bike. The snake was a bloody mess. Will sent us a picture of the dead serpent.
I praise Jesus for the authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and over the power of the enemy, that nothing will injure us!
What have you to be angry about? Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. Trust Him and He will do it. He will bring forth righteousness as light.
Praise Jesus in Your Sleep
Our trip to Alabama included a stop in Huntsville to visit my daughter Laura and her family. One night, I was talking again in my sleep but instead of anger, I was praising the Lord and praying over my grandson Aiden. I was singing and praising so loudly that my son Anthony heard me from a downstairs bedroom.
I can testify that praising the Lord is much more delightful than fretting and expressing anger over evildoers.
What have you to be angry about? Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. Trust Him and He will do it. He will bring forth righteousness as light.
Pray for a Blessing
It has been quite a week for me in the Spirit. The other night, I was praising the Lord and during the praise he brought two friends to mind, who like me, have had some health challenges over the past few years. And the Lord said to me that the three of us have been going to the doctors and hospitals and praying for healing. Those things are fine, but God suggested instead of praying for healing that I start praying for a blessing of the Lord over the three of us. So, pray I did! And I pray over all of you that the Lord would bestow a blessing from the Throne Room.
Closing
Deuteronomy 13:
4 “You shall follow the LORD your God and fear Him; and you shall keep His commandments, listen to His voice, serve Him, and cling to Him.
Follow Him, fear Him, keep His commands, listen to Him, serve Him, and cling to Him. Cease from anger. Trample serpents, take authority over the devil. Fret not but delight in the Lord. And rejoice that your name is recorded in Heaven!
Let us pray.
Father God, we repent of anger, and we pray in Jesus’ name for the help of the Holy Spirit that we would cease from anger and fretting over evildoers. We follow You and fear You only. We covet the sound of Your voice in our spirits. We cling to Your word, and we pray for a blessing that prospers and heals. Thank You for the authority to trample the enemy. We delight in You, and we rejoice that our names are recorded in Heaven. Amen.
