There is a lot of talk this weekend about potential power outages across the nation due to the forecasted ice and snowstorm. So, maybe it is no coincidence that today’s word is about power, not power failure, but divine power which never fails.
In 2nd Peter 1, the Lord’s disciple instructs that we have been granted that divine power.
The Grant of Divine Power
2nd Peter 1:
2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord;
3 seeing that His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness, through the true knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and excellence.
4 For by these He has granted to us His precious and magnificent promises, in order that by them you might become partakers of [the] divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world by lust.
Grace and peace are multiplied to us in the knowledge of God and Jesus. Note that it is knowing Jesus that brings it. When you asked Jesus into your heart you gained access to that grace and peace. This is the grace and peace that calms the storm.
What’s more, verse 3 says His “divine power” has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness. Now, the word “divine” means “proceeding directly from God.” So, verse 3 is talking about power that comes directly from God through Jesus to grant us everything pertaining to life. His power grants us forgiveness, healing, guidance, wisdom, and protection.
Verse 4 promises that we become partakers of His “divine nature,” meaning we can transcend our fleshly nature and escape the corruption of this world, which is corruption that is here by lust. When you think about corruption, it always stems from lust, which is an excessive desire for something. The word “lust” usually connotes sexual lust, but it is more than that. We can (and do) lust for anything…money, political power, drugs, etc. Therefore, verse 4 really means our relationship with Jesus (knowing Him) allows us to escape corruption and partake in His divine nature, where divine power is.
I have been meditating a lot lately about the power of God and asking myself why I do not call on that power more often. Why don’t I pray and fast more, and partake of His divine nature, and ask for His divine power?
Jesus felt so strongly about that power that He encouraged the disciples to receive it just before He ascended into Heaven.
Acts 1:
8 but you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”
9 And after He had said these things, He was lifted up while they were looking on, and a cloud received Him out of their sight.
So, the word of the Lord today is divine power. It has been granted to us and will provide everything pertaining to life and godliness.
The scriptures that follow reinforce the promise of 2nd Peter 1:2-4.
Forgiveness, Healing, Guidance, and a Guardian
His divine nature manifested in a big way for us on the cross.
1st Peter 2:
24 and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.
25 For you were continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls.
He bore our sins in His body which brought us forgiveness from the Father. He did that so we might die to sin, live in righteousness, and experience eternal life. Further, the wounds He suffered grant us healing, not only healing in our bodies, but also in our mind, will, and emotions.
In addition to all that, verse 25 tells us that He is our Shepherd and Guardian of our souls. A shepherd leads and protects us, but He also guards our healed mind, will, and emotions, He guards us and protects us from the devil, so we will not be snatched away by the one who lies to us.
John 10:27 “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me;
28 and I give eternal life to them, and they shall never perish; and no one shall snatch them out of My hand.
29 “My Father, who has given [them] to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch [them] out of the Father’s hand.
30 “I and the Father are one.”
When you are in His presence, when you are praising Him, praying, fasting, He will speak to you, and you will hear His voice. Do not be afraid to follow Him. Do whatever He says to you in the Spirit. Act soon on it, before you forget about it. If we follow Him, we will not be snatched from His hand.
John 16 promises guidance as well.
John 16:
13 “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.
14 “He shall glorify Me; for He shall take of Mine, and shall disclose [it] to you.
So, His divine power manifested on the cross and from the grave, resulting in our forgiveness, healing, guidance, and protection. But there is even more to partaking in His divine nature.
Authority over the Devil
Luke 10:
19 “Behold, I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall injure you.
20 “Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are recorded in heaven.”
Jesus has given us authority over the power of the enemy. Some think the devil has no power, but he does. He just doesn’t have the authority to use it on us unless we grant it to him by fearing. Our Shepherd and Guardian says we have authority over the power of the devil, and nothing will injure us. We need to start walking in this authority over Satan. It is part of the divine nature that we partake in by knowing, seeking, and following Jesus.
If you are feeling anxious or fearful about anything, I want to encourage you to employ your authority over any serpents, scorpions, or any other manifestation of the evil one in your path. Whatever your storm is, speak to it, but speak as one who has authority.
To Jesus, this power over the enemy is just a fringe benefit to us. In verse 20, He says in effect: “No big deal…rejoice instead that you are saved.”
Power to Make Wealth
One last point today regarding divine power: God has given us the power to make wealth.
Deuteronomy 8:
17 “Otherwise, you may say in your heart, ‘My power and the strength of my hand made me this wealth.’
18 “But you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who is giving you power to make wealth, that He may confirm His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as [it is] this day.
Stressing over finances comes when we think we are responsible for making wealth. Verse 18 instructs that God gives us that power to make wealth. It is part of His divine nature, that we partake in when we get to know Jesus Christ.
Let us pray.
Father God, thank You for divine power that proceeds directly from You, and which grants us everything pertaining to life and godliness. Thank You for the divine nature that we partake in through our relationship with Jesus. Thank You for forgiveness, healing, guidance, and protection. Thank You for guarding our souls and for delegating to us Your authority over the enemy. And thank You for the power to make wealth. Quicken us to pray in the Spirit and to exercise our authority in all matters. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
