Today I want to talk about the Judgment Seat of Christ, as described by the Apostle Paul in 2nd Corinthians 5.
Before we begin, however, it is important to discuss what the Judgment Seat of Christ is not. It is not the final judgment that determines eternal salvation or condemnation for those coming out of the Great Tribulation. That judgment is called the Great White Throne Judgment and is described vividly by John in the Book of Revelation. We will review the Great White Throne Judgment a little later in this session.
On the other hand, the Judgment Seat of Christ is for believers. It is prophesied to occur immediately after the Rapture and therefore is not a judgment of whether we are saved, but instead is an evaluation of our works. But before we get too deeply into what this means, let’s look at the timing of the day relative to the other End Tines Events.
Sequence of End Times Events
The Judgment Seat of Christ is prophesied to occur immediately after the Rapture and before the onset of the Tribulation period. While some Bible scholars differ on the exact sequence of End Times events, the following timing seems to be forming a consensus among those I have studied:
- Rapture of the Church (Imminent)
- Judgment Seat of Christ
- 7-Year Tribulation Period / Saints Praising God in Throne Room
- Marriage Supper of the Lamb / Church Clothed in Fine Linen
- Second Coming of Christ (Battle of Armageddon)
- 1,000-Year Reign of Jesus Christ and All Saints
- Satan’s Release / Rebellion / Condemnation
- Great White Throne Judgment
- Creation of New Heaven and Earth
- Establishment of New Jerusalem.
The Judgment Seat of Christ is for raptured believers only and is described by some Bible scholars as more of an awards ceremony. Let’s look more closely at what the scriptures tell us about it.
All Christians Must Appear
2nd Corinthians 5:
10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad. (NASB)
Notice Paul writes “…we must all appear…” before the judgement seat of Christ to be recompensed for our deeds, whether good or bad. It is important to emphasize here that we are saved by grace through faith, not works (Ephesians 2:8), but Paul is clear that our works will be evaluated. So, why will our works be judged?
The word “recompensed” in verse 10 means repaid or rewarded for something done. And the Greek word for “seat” is “bema,” which implies a rostrum or a raised platform on a stage. The word “bad” at the end of verse 10 does not necessarily mean evil. In fact, the primary meaning of the Greek word for “bad” in that verse is “worthless.” So, we will have a discussion with Jesus about the eternal value of the things we did.
Therefore, we can say that this day will be more like an awards ceremony or better said, a rewards ceremony, and not a judgment that determines salvation / condemnation. The fact is, if we are raptured, Jesus has already determined that we are saved.
The fact that Jesus is the One who will judge us is supported by John 5.
John 5:
22 “For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son,
The Rewards Ceremony
Support for the idea of a rewards ceremony, as opposed to salvation determination, is found in several other passages of scripture.
Hebrew 6:
9 ¶ But, beloved, we are convinced of better things concerning you, and things that accompany salvation, though we are speaking in this way.
10 For God is not unjust so as to forget your work and the love which you have shown toward His name, in having ministered and in still ministering to the saints.
Note the expression “things that accompany salvation.” Your salvation is determined at the Rapture and is based on whether you have confessed with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and have believed in your heart that God raised Him from the dead. Verse 10 indicates that God will acknowledge the work we did for His Kingdom, especially in ministering to other saints.
In 2nd Timothy 4, the Apostle Paul explicitly refers to a crown of righteousness and an award “on that day.”
2nd Timothy 4:
7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith;
8 in the future there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day; and not only to me, but also to all who have loved His appearing.
There are other crowns referred to in the scriptures. There is the crown of life (James 1:12), the crown of glory for pastors (1st Peter 5:4), and the crown of rejoicing for soul winners (1st Thessalonians 2:19), to name a few.
The Apostle Paul indicates in 1st Corinthians 4 that God will praise us.
1st Corinthians 4:
5 Therefore do not go on passing judgment before the time, [but wait] until the Lord comes who will both bring to light the things hidden in the darkness and disclose the motives of [men’s] hearts; and then each man’s praise will come to him from God.
While Jesus will judge our works, our praise will come from God. Rest assured that the Lord will graciously find us praiseworthy. There will be no disappointment or embarrassment for us post-Rapture. The Lord will tell us “Well done, good and faithful servant” if we have accepted His Son in our hearts.
Jesus indicated to John in Revelation 22 that a rewards day is coming.
Revelation 22:
12 “Behold, I am coming quickly, and My reward [is] with Me, to render to every man according to what he has done.
Jesus is coming soon, and he will have our reward for us at the Judgment Seat of Christ. Psalms 62 also reinforces this rewards aspect.
Psalms 62:
12 And lovingkindness is Thine, O Lord, For Thou dost recompense a man according to his work.
The Hebrew word for “recompense” is “shalam,” which means to reciprocate, repay, prosper, render, or reward.
2nd John 1:
8 Watch yourselves, that you might not lose what we have accomplished, but that you may receive a full reward.
Again, John is indicating a full reward, thus implying “things that accompany salvation,” much like we saw in Hebrews 6:9.
Eternal Assignments
In addition to being rewarded for our works, there is biblical evidence that the Judgment Seat of Christ will determine our eternal assignments as we rule and reign with Jesus.
2nd Timothy 2:
12 If we endure, we shall also reign with Him; If we deny Him, He also will deny us;
Revelation 5:
10 “And Thou hast made them [to be] a kingdom and priests to our God; and they will reign upon the earth.”
Revelation 22:
5 And there shall no longer be [any] night; and they shall not have need of the light of a lamp nor the light of the sun, because the Lord God shall illumine them; and they shall reign forever and ever.
Great White Throne Judgment
As discussed earlier, the Great White Throne Judgment occurs well after the Rapture and the Judgment Seat of Christ. This judgment will occur after the Tribulation, after Satan is released following 1,000 years of captivity. Satan will again deceive many and will be cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, and then this final judgment will occur immediately before the new heaven and new earth are created.
This is the vision that John saw.
Revelation 20:
11 ¶ And I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them.
12 And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is [the book] of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds.
13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one [of them] according to their deeds.
14 And death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire.
15 And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.
The Great White Throne Judgment is not for us; it is for non-believers who will be officially cast into hell for all eternity.
Closing
In closing, let me stress that the Judgment Seat of Christ will be our performance review before the Lord, but not to determine if we are saved. We are saved by grace, through faith, and not by works, that no one should boast. Instead, Jesus will review our works with us, and our praise will come from God. How awesome!
The Judgment Seat of Christ is not something to dread because Jesus is a Righteous Judge, but it should motivate us to be about the Lord’s work in these last days, and to store up our treasures in Heaven, not earth.
There will be no competition with others, no embarrassment, no disappointment, just a commendation from our Lord, and a determination of our role as we reign with Him forever. We will be perfectly placed by Him in the new Jerusalem for all eternity. All glory to Jesus!
Let us pray.
Father God, thank You for the Judgment Seat of Christ, and the privilege to be judged by our loving Lord and Savior. We pray that you would show us the works You have for us as we await that great day. Lead us, Lord, to works that have eternal value in Your eyes, and empower us by the Holy Spirit to walk in those works that You have prepared for us. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
