The Lord put the word “incomprehensible” into my spirit today. I hope I can articulate it in a way that you will comprehend the breadth, the length, the height, and the depth of this word.
Incomprehensible means “impossible to comprehend; having, or subject to, no limits.” The word “comprehend” means to grasp the nature, significance, or meaning of. The Bible teaches that Jesus is the Light of Life, but the darkness in this world does not comprehend the Light.
John 1:
1 ¶ In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 He was in the beginning with God.
3 All things came into being by Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.
4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.
5 ¶ And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. (NASB)
It is interesting to me that the Greek word for “comprehend” in verse 5 is “katalambano,” which means to take, seize, possess, apprehend, come upon, comprehend, perceive, or overtake.
We tend to think of “comprehend” as the mental process of understanding something, but we see in the Greek definition that it means more than that. It means to take possession of, seize, or overtake. It also incorporates the idea of perception or recognition. In other words, the Light of Jesus comes to us in the form of the Holy Spirit, in the form of the word of God and wisdom, but the darkness does not perceive it.
This has important consequences for us today as we deal with a world of people who do not perceive the Light. When we speak the word, we speak light into a world of darkness, yet the darkness does not comprehend it, does not perceive the wisdom of it. The darkness does not take possession of it.
The good news is that the darkness does not overtake the Light. Darkness cannot and will not overtake the Light of Life that comes from the word of God, from Jesus.
The Significance of Perceiving
The Apostle Paul underscored the importance of perceiving all that Jesus has for us.
Ephesians 3:
14 ¶ For this reason, I bow my knees before the Father,
15 from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name,
16 that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man;
17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; [and] that you, being rooted and grounded in love,
18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth,
19 and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fulness of God.
20 Now to Him who is able to do exceeding abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us,
21 to Him [be] the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.
This is a powerful prayer from Paul. He gets on his knees before the Father and asks Him to grant us according to His riches in glory, the strength and power of the Holy Spirit, in the inner man, so that Christ, who is the word of God, may dwell in our hearts through faith, so that we may be rooted and grounded in love, and that we may be able to comprehend (katalambano) the magnitude of the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge. Paul wants us to be able to comprehend the breadth (width), the length, the height, and the depth of His love. He wants us to perceive, in our inner man, the dimensions of His love for us.
Our ability to comprehend that love comes only by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in our inner man. It does not come from a head knowledge. It does not come from reading about it. It does not come from a Facebook post. It comes only by the Holy Spirit in our inner man. And for this reason, it is difficult to communicate that love to the darkness. John 1:5 says the darkness does not comprehend it.
Perceive the Incomprehensible
Notice that Paul continues in Ephesians 3:20 to point out how incomprehensible Jesus’ ability is.
Ephesians 3:
20 Now to Him who is able to do exceeding abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us,
21 to Him [be] the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations forever and ever. Amen.
Jesus can do exceedingly abundantly beyond all that we ask or think. It is beyond what we can ask or think, meaning what He can do is incomprehensible to us.
Note also that Jesus can do all that according to the power that works within us. Get that, or I should say, comprehend that – the power to do more than we can ask or think works within us.
If you are having trouble comprehending all this, you are not alone. Jesus’ apostles had trouble perceiving it as well.
Luke 18:
31 ¶ And He took the twelve aside and said to them, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things which are written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished.
32 “For He will be delivered to the Gentiles, and will be mocked and mistreated and spit upon,
33 and after they have scourged Him, they will kill Him; and the third day He will rise again.”
34 And they understood none of these things, and this saying was hidden from them, and they did not comprehend the things that were said.
And so, if Jesus had issues communicating to His apostles, if they did not perceive the depth of the glory He was describing, how can we witness to an unbelieving people?
Relating to a Darkened World
In describing all that the Lord has prepared for us, Paul talks about a hidden wisdom that the world doesn’t get, but we do, thanks to the Holy Spirit.
1st Corinthians 2:
4 And my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power,
5 that your faith should not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God.
6 ¶ Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are mature; a wisdom, however, not of this age, nor of the rulers of this age, who are passing away;
7 but we speak God’s wisdom in a mystery, the hidden [wisdom,] which God predestined before the ages to our glory;
8 [the wisdom] which none of the rulers of this age has understood; for if they had understood it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory;
9 but just as it is written, “THINGS WHICH EYE HAS NOT SEEN AND EAR HAS NOT HEARD, AND [which] HAVE NOT ENTERED THE HEART OF MAN, ALL THAT GOD HAS PREPARED FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HIM.”
10 For to us God revealed [them] through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God.
There is more glory for our eyes to see, more wisdom for our ears to hear, and more love for our hearts to absorb – all that God has prepared for those who love Him. He is coming to take us to a place He has prepared for us, a place to marry us as His bride, the Church. Somehow, we need to share this incomprehensible word.
The Bottom Line
I once had a boss who told me he preferred to negotiate with someone who was able to comprehend the depth of the argument. If your debater does not comprehend the points you are making, it is difficult to win the negotiation. I believe in many ways that is where we are today as Christians hoping to convince a deceived world of unbelievers. Paul taught us there is a hidden wisdom that the world does not get. John wrote that Jesus is the Light, and the darkness does not comprehend it.
In these end days, our witness needs to adapt to the increase in darkness; that is, the very increase in lawlessness that Jesus described. We cannot expect to win a “head knowledge” debate with those who are deceived and those who will someday be subjected to the deception of the antichrist.
We cannot expect to win a social media debate with the debater of this age. Instead, we must pray for those who are in darkness. Today, the word of the Lord tells us in Ephesians 3:16-19 “…that… through His Spirit in the inner man; Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; [and] that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled up to all the fulness of God.”
It is going to take the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in the inner man for someone to comprehend the incomprehensible love of Christ, which surpasses knowledge.
Pray for your friends, family, and even your enemies to be drawn by the Spirit of God into the fellowship of Christ.
Let us pray.
Father God, thank You for the incomprehensible love of Jesus and for the hidden wisdom you have placed in our inner man by the Holy Spirit. Lord, we pray for those who are deceived by the darkness in our world. Draw them, Lord, that they may know the only love that will fill the void in their lives. And Lord, help us to perceive the incomprehensible depth of Jesus’ love for us, as we await the very manifestation of that love, when He comes for His Bride. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
If anyone has not yet received the Lord Jesus Christ in their heart, and desires to do so, please repeat this prayer after me:
Father God, I repent of my sin and ask for forgiveness today. I confess and declare with my mouth that Jesus is Lord, and I believe with all my heart that You raised Him from the dead for the forgiveness of sins. Jesus, please come into my heart and change me. Send the Holy Spirit to guide and direct me in wisdom and to enable me to overcome temptation from this day forth. Thank You for my salvation. I look forward to the day of the Rapture when I can be with You forever. Amen.
