Last week we continued with the Pathway to Freedom word by studying the tremendous manifestation of God that freed Paul and Silas from prison in Acts 16.  Let’s review last week’s key passage of scripture.

Acts 16:

 23 And when they had inflicted many blows upon them, they threw them into prison, commanding the jailer to guard them securely;

 24 and he, having received such a command, threw them into the inner prison, and fastened their feet in the stocks.

 25 ¶ But about midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns of praise to God, and the prisoners were listening to them;

 26 and suddenly there came a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison house were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone’s chains were unfastened.

 27 And when the jailer had been roused out of sleep and had seen the prison doors opened, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped.

 28 But Paul cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Do yourself no harm, for we are all here!”

 29 And he called for lights and rushed in and, trembling with fear, he fell down before Paul and Silas,

 30 and after he brought them out, he said, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”

 31 And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you shall be saved, you and your household.”

 32 And they spoke the word of the Lord to him together with all who were in his house.

 33 And he took them that [very] hour of the night and washed their wounds, and immediately he was baptized, he and all his [household.]

 34 And he brought them into his house and set food before them, and rejoiced greatly, having believed in God with his whole household. (NASB)

Last week, as I gave the word on the podcast, the Spirit of God moved as I spoke about verses 27-30.  God impressed upon me that the jailer was moved from suicide to salvation in an instant because he received a word from God through Paul.  The Holy Spirit had me pause to pray for anyone who might be suicidal or mentally depressed.  The prayer was that the word of God would free them from the oppression of depression, and they would, like the jailer, go from suicide to salvation.

So, God continued to speak to me this week about the power of the word of God to free the oppressed.  The jailer got a word from Paul: “Do yourself no harm, for we are all here!”  Paul was quickened by the Holy Spirit to know that the jailer would commit suicide if the prisoners had escaped, so he assured him that everyone was there – no one had escaped.

When you think about it, this situation is quite typical – the devil oppresses us by lying about our circumstances.  The jailer presumed that all had escaped, and it took a word from God to reveal that lie and lift the oppression off the jailer.

When the jailer realized he had received a word from God, he asked immediately: “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”  That is the power of a word from God – he immediately wanted to give his heart to the Lord.  Of course, Paul led him and his entire household to the Lord.

The word of God has the power to renew our minds and change the way we see ourselves.  The jailer went from considering himself worthy of death to being worthy of eternal life, just based on a word from God. 

So, I thought today we should study the word of God in hopes that the power therein will renew our minds.  Just absorb these scriptures into you spirit and allow the Hoy Spirit to do a work in you.

Renewal of Your Mind

Let’s start in Romans 12.

Romans 12:

 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

Trying to conform to this world can get you to a place where the ruler of this world, Satan, can oppress you.  He will chain you to conformance where you care about what others think of you more than you care about the will of God for your life.  The good news from Paul in this passage is that we can be transformed by the renewing of our mind.  As the Holy Spirit reveals God’s word to us, He speaks into our spirit, and our spirit then has the power to transform our mind.  We saw this with the Acts 16 jailer.

But we cannot just decide to renew our minds in and of ourselves.  That is what the world teaches – “change your attitude, change your way of thinking, or your way of talking!”

No, you cannot renew your own mind.  The renewal of the mind that Paul is discussing is done in the spirit realm, and it is the work of the Holy Spirit.  The battle is in the spirit, and it belongs to the Lord.

Battle In the Spirit

Ephesians 6:

 10 ¶ Finally, be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of His might.

 11 Put on the full armor of God, that you may be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.

 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual [forces] of wickedness in the heavenly [places.]

 13 Therefore, take up the full armor of God, that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. (NASB)

Note that Paul advises us to be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might, not ours.  If we put on the full armor of God, we will be able to resist the schemes of the devil, which oppress and depress us.  Put your faith in God’s might, not your own.  The armor of God comprises truth, righteousness, faith in the Gospel of salvation, the word of God (sword of the Spirit), and praying in the spirit (tongues).  If we put those things on, we will be empowered to overcome oppression and depression.

In verse 12, Paul explains the battle for our minds takes place in the spirit realm, where world forces of darkness and wickedness fight to oppress us.  The New King James Version expresses Ephesians 6:12 this way:

Ephesians 6:

 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. (NKJV)

The word “principalities” in the Greek means magistrate, power, or principal ruler, which infers that there is a hierarchy of power and rule in Satan’s shop.  When we fight the thoughts of our mind in our own strength, we move up that hierarchy and eventually we will lose.  Therefore, Paul advises us to take the full armor of God and battle oppression by believing in the power of the Word and the revelation of that word by the Holy Spirit.

Promises to the Crushed in Spirit

In Psalms 34, King David proclaims that God is near the brokenhearted and saves those who are depressed.

Psalms 34:

 18 The LORD is near to the brokenhearted, And saves those who are crushed in spirit.

Psalms 147:

 3 He heals the brokenhearted, And binds up their wounds.

Just soak in that truth for a while.  If you are feeling down or depressed, if you are crushed in spirit, just know that the Lord is near to you and wants to deliver you from that place and heal your wounds.  He wants to give you His full armor so you can resist and stand firm in the evil day.  He wants to transform you by the renewing of your mind by His Holy Spirit.

1st Peter 5 acknowledges our anxiety and assures us that God cares for us.

1^st Peter 5:

 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time,

 7 casting all your anxiety upon Him, because He cares for you.

 8 ¶ Be of sober [spirit,] be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

 9 But resist him, firm in [your] faith, knowing that the same experiences of suffering are being accomplished by your brethren who are in the world.

 10 ¶ And after you have suffered for a little while, the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, will Himself perfect, confirm, strengthen [and] establish you.

Verses 6-7 tell us to humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God, and to cast all our anxiety upon Him. This suggests that pride may be at the root of what we are feeling.  If we are depressed, is Satan using a prideful spirit in us to conform us to the world?  Are we jealous because of pride?  Are we feeling down because we do not feel like we measure up to others?  If we humble ourselves, pride leaves and there can be a lifting of oppression as we acknowledge the Lord as the One who exalts us.

Peter is saying first humble yourself under the mighty hand of God, and then cast all your anxiety upon Him because He cares for you.  In verse 8, Peter confirms what Paul said – that this is spiritual warfare, and we need to be on alert that the devil is at work against us.  In verse 10, the Apostle encourages us that the God of all grace will perfect us, confirm us, strengthen us, and establish us.  In other words, He will transform us by the renewing of our minds.  Praise Jesus!

Promises of a Sound Mind

The scriptures promise that God has given us a sound mind and He has great plans for us to use that mind.

2^nd Timothy 1:

7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. (NKJV)

Jeremiah 29:

 11 ‘For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.

 12 ‘Then you will call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you.

 13 ‘And you will seek Me and find [Me,] when you search for Me with all your heart.

Again, just soak in these promises – a sound mind without fear, plans for a future and a hope.  Therefore, hopelessness is not for us, declares the Lord!

Philippians 4:

 6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

 7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, shall guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

 8 Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, let your mind dwell on these things.

When we started studying the Pathway to Freedom on July 5, we learned from Peter’s experience in prison in Acts 12 that fervent prayer was essential to attaining freedom indeed.  In Philippians 4, Paul is saying that freedom from anxiety requires prayer with thanksgiving.  Thanksgiving is key to entering the presence of God where the peace of God visits us.  And His peace surpasses all comprehension and guards our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.

There are times when our comprehension needs to be surpassed.  When the facts are not particularly favorable, we need the peace of God to surpass our comprehension and guard us.  That is how we can be anxious for nothing.  Prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, letting your requests be known to God, will take you there.  It will free you from oppression.  It will heal your crushed spirit.

Closing

In closing, then, I encourage you today to sing of the goodness of God.  Sing praises to His name.  Give Him glory for His lifelong faithfulness and mercy to us.  Your thanksgiving and praise will free you from whatever bondage you are facing.  It will enable you to cast your anxiety upon Him and allow His peace to guard your hearts and minds, in Jesus’ name!  You will be free indeed.

Let us pray.

Father God, thank You for transforming us by the renewal of our minds.  Thank You for the strength of Your might and the full armor of God which enables us to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.  Help us to battle in the spirit against principalities, powers, world forces of darkness and wickedness.  We pray that You would lift those of us crushed in spirit.  We cast all anxiety upon You, and we thank You for a sound mind and for the great plans to prosper us and give us a future and a hope.  We pray for Your peace to surpass our comprehension and guard our hearts and minds.  In Jesus’ name we pray.  Amen.

Father God, I repent of my sin and ask for forgiveness today.  I confess and declare with my mouth that Jesus is Lord, and I believe with all my heart that You raised Him from the dead for the forgiveness of sins.  Jesus, please come into my heart and change me.  Send the Holy Spirit to guide and direct me in wisdom and to enable me to overcome temptation from this day forth.  Thank You for my salvation.  I look forward to the day of the Rapture when I can be with You forever.  Amen.
