Last week we talked about “Clay that Speaks” and questions what the Potter has formed. We studied scripture that reminded us that we are made in the image and likeness of an infallible God. We are created by His perfect workmanship. We were formed male and female in the womb by Him, and He has great plans to prosper us. Therefore, there is no reason for the clay to question the Potter.
Today’s word is quite the contrast. Blood that speaks gets the ear of God. The Lord sparked this word in me through my son, Will, who shared from his study of the Book of Hebrews. Will said Hebrews 12:24 compares Jesus’ blood to the blood of Abel. Both speak to God, but they say very different things.
Blood that Cries for Justice and Vengeance
Abel’s blood was innocent, and it cried out to God. And God heard it.
Genesis 4:
8 ¶ Now Cain talked with Abel his brother; and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother and killed him.
9 ¶ Then the LORD said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”
10 And He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground.
11 “So now you are cursed from the earth, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. (NKJV)
Hebrews 11:
4 ¶ By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and through it he being dead still speaks.
The author of Hebrews is saying that Abel’s blood still speaks. It is innocent blood that cries out to God for justice due to the evil perpetrated on it.
Blood that Speaks Better Things
In contrast to Abel’s innocent blood, which speaks of evil perpetrated and seeks justice and even vengeance, there is blood that calls for better things. It is blood that calls for mercy and spares us from deserved punishment. This blood provides for the atonement of sin and forgiveness.
In Exodus, when God decided to execute His judgment against Egypt, He used the blood of unblemished lambs as a sacrifice to mercifully spare His people from that judgment and from the oppression of Egypt.
Exodus 12:
5 ‘Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats.
6 ‘Now you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month. Then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it at twilight.
7 ‘And they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses where they eat it.
Exodus 12:
12 ‘For I will pass through the land of Egypt on that night, and will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the LORD.
13 ‘Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you; and the plague shall not be on you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.
The blood of the lamb on the doorposts spoke to God and told Him to have mercy on that house while executing His judgment. But what began as merciful Passover blood quickly became sacrificial blood that began to speak forgiveness and atonement for sin. As the people of God sinned, it became necessary for God to establish the procedure of blood atonement in the Old Testament. This law of blood sacrifice was established in the Book of Leviticus for Aaron the High Priest to follow for the forgiveness of himself and the people.
Leviticus 16:
14 “He shall take some of the blood of the bull and sprinkle it with his finger on the mercy seat on the east side; and before the mercy seat he shall sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times.
15 ¶ “Then he shall kill the goat of the sin offering, which is for the people, bring its blood inside the veil, do with that blood as he did with the blood of the bull, and sprinkle it on the mercy seat and before the mercy seat.
16 “So he shall make atonement for the Holy Place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions, for all their sins; and so he shall do for the tabernacle of meeting which remains among them in the midst of their uncleanness.
17 “There shall be no man in the tabernacle of meeting when he goes in to make atonement in the Holy Place, until he comes out, that he may make atonement for himself, for his household, and for all the assembly of Israel.
The High Priest would do this every year for the forgiveness of sin. This blood spoke mercy, forgiveness, and atonement for the sins of the priest and the people.
Blood that Speaks Once for All
The author of Hebrews explains why blood was necessary and how Jesus’ blood spoke more powerfully on our behalf. Jesus stepped up as our High Priest, and His blood spoke even better things than Abel’s blood and the blood of bulls and goats. Jesus’ blood not only forgive us, but it also justifies us forever.
Hebrews 9:
11 But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation.
12 Not with the blood of goats and calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.
13 For if the blood of bulls and goats and the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh,
14 how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?
15 ¶ And for this reason He is the Mediator of the new covenant, by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions under the first covenant, that those who are called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.
16 For where there is a testament, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator.
17 For a testament is in force after men are dead, since it has no power at all while the testator lives.
18 Therefore not even the first covenant was dedicated without blood.
19 For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according to the law, he took the blood of calves and goats, with water, scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all the people,
20 saying, “This is the blood of the covenant which God has commanded you.”
21 Then likewise he sprinkled with blood both the tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry.
22 And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and without shedding of blood there is no remission.
23 ¶ Therefore it was necessary that the copies of the things in the heavens should be purified with these, but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.
24 For Christ has not entered the holy places made with hands, which are copies of the true, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us;
25 not that He should offer Himself often, as the high priest enters the Most Holy Place every year with blood of another–
26 He then would have had to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now, once at the end of the ages, He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.
27 And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment,
28 so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation. (NKJV)
Note verse 28 is a promise of His Second Coming. There are two phases to the Second Coming: the Rapture which is our salvation, and the judgment of evil of those who resist His Lordship and refuse His mercy during the Church age of grace.
Hebrews 12:
24 to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel.
Blood that Comes Full Circle
At Jesus’ Second Coming, His blood will speak again. Isaiah prophesied about the winepress of God’s wrath, and another sprinkling of blood, but this time a blood that speaks the vengeance of our God.
Isaiah 63:
3 “I have trodden the winepress alone, And from the peoples no one was with Me. For I have trodden them in My anger, And trampled them in My fury; Their blood is sprinkled upon My garments, And I have stained all My robes.
4 For the day of vengeance is in My heart, And the year of My redeemed has come.
The year of our redemption is not a good year for those who perpetrated evil in the earth and did not repent and receive Jesus into their hearts. God’s wrath will trample them, and their blood will be vengeance for Abel’s blood and all blood spilled by evil. Thus, it is blood that comes full circle and is no longer merciful.
This blood was also seen by John, in Revelation 19.
Revelation 19:
11 ¶ Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and makes war.
12 His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself.
13 He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God.
14 And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses.
15 Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.
16 And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.
17 Then I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the birds that fly in the midst of heaven, “Come and gather together for the supper of the great God,
18 “that you may eat the flesh of kings, the flesh of captains, the flesh of mighty men, the flesh of horses and of those who sit on them, and the flesh of all people, free and slave, both small and great.”
19 And I saw the beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army.
20 Then the beast was captured, and with him the false prophet who worked signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image. These two were cast alive into the lake of fire burning with brimstone.
21 And the rest were killed with the sword which proceeded from the mouth of Him who sat on the horse. And all the birds were filled with their flesh. (NKJV)
Closing
In closing, blood speaks to God’s heart. Abel’s blood spoke first and cried out for justice. His blood touched God. God established blood sacrifice as way to deliver His mercy to His people at the Passover. He then established animal sacrifice as an extension of His mercy to forgive the people’s sin.
All the Old Testament blood sacrifice was prophetic symbolism of our High Priest, Jesus, our unblemished Lamb, whose blood spoke even more powerfully on our behalf, once for all.
But there is more blood that will speak when Jesus comes again. After rapturing His church, Jesus will trample those who remain in rebellion, doing evil. He will avenge the blood of Abel and all murders. The blood on His robe will have the final say by controlling the winepress of God’s wrath.
Let us pray.
Father God, thank You for the blood of the Lamb who was and is without blemish. Thank You for the remission of our sins, which requires blood sacrifice. Thank You for our Testator, Jesus, whom You raised from the dead, whose blood and death were necessary for His Testament, our inheritance, to become effective. The Lord Jesus is our High Priest, and He is coming again to accomplish Your will forever. We praise the name of Jesus for His blood that speaks better things. Amen.
If anyone has not yet received the Lord Jesus Christ in their heart, and desires to do so, please repeat this prayer after me:
Father God, I repent of my sin and ask for forgiveness today. I confess and declare with my mouth that Jesus is Lord, and I believe with all my heart that You raised Him from the dead for the forgiveness of sins. Jesus, please come into my heart and change me. Send the Holy Spirit to guide and direct me in wisdom and to enable me to overcome temptation from this day forth. Thank You for my salvation. I look forward to the day of the Rapture when I can be with You forever. Amen.
