The word of the Lord for us today is that unbelief, in any form, is evil. Weakness of faith is an easy pitfall when things are not going the way we want them, or the way we thought God promised they would go. Sometimes, when it appears unbelievers have triumphed, it can shake or weaken your faith or perhaps weaken your conviction in the truth of God’s word. At those times, the devil is quick to inject thoughts of unbelief into our minds. Today’s word is a warning not to play in that sandbox.
Today’s keynote scripture is:
Hebrews 3:
12 Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God;
13 but exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. (NKJV)
The author of Hebrews is associating unbelief with evil. When we struggle in our faith, he writes that we should beware because we are playing with fire, departing from the living God, and developing an evil heart.
Unbelief is an Evil Spirit
Unbelief emanates from the evil, demonic spirit of unbelief which is alive in the world today and working overtime in these last days. The Apostle Paul describes it as the prince of the power of the air.
Ephesians 2:
1 ¶ And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses and sins,
2 in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience,
3 among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, just as the others.
The Greek word for “disobedience” is “apeitheia,” which means obstinate and rebellious unbelief. It is a serious spirit, and it is looking for a home in your heart.
If you have ever tried to witness for Jesus and encountered resistance from the people you are talking to, then you have encountered the spirit of unbelief. That spirit wants you to backslide.
Hebrews 3:12 is warning us to beware that evil spirit so it does not enter our hearts. Verse 13 of Hebrews 3 says we should hurry to exhort or implore each other to believe so our hearts do not become hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.
Maybe you feel you are in a season where you need to relax your Christian convictions to accommodate others. Don’t do it! There is a serious penalty to dabbling in unbelief, to doubting or compromising the word of God.
In Paul’s letter to Titus, the apostle equates unbelief with a defiled mind and conscience.
Titus 1:
15 To the pure all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even their mind and conscience are defiled.
16 They profess to know God, but in works they deny Him, being abominable, disobedient, and disqualified for every good work.
Paul touches on a key point for today. Many profess to be Christian but then deny His word. For example, some “Christians” believe there are other ways to salvation beside Jesus. They profess to be Christian, but they deny His words in John 14:6 “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.”
Paul writes in verse 16 above that such “denying Christians” are abominable, disobedient, and disqualified.
Unbelief Angers God
Maybe you are thinking: “I know some unbelievers that are otherwise good people, not evil.” You need to rethink that because the Bible teaches that unbelief angers God and is therefore evil.
Psalms 78:
21 Therefore the LORD heard this and was furious; So a fire was kindled against Jacob, And anger also came up against Israel,
22 Because they did not believe in God, And did not trust in His salvation.
Unbelief Calls God a Liar
1st John 5:
10 ¶ He who believes in the Son of God has the witness in himself; he who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has given of His Son.
God’s word says that He sent His only Son, Jesus, to be the only way to salvation. If you do not believe that, or if you believe there are other ways to eternal salvation, you are calling God a liar. You are saying His word is wrong.
Unbelief Brings Wrath
The writer of Hebrews tells us to beware the spirit of unbelief because an evil heart of unbelief puts us right in the crosshairs of the wrath of God.
John 3:
18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
19 “And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
John 3:
36 “He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”
Revelation 21:
8 “But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
We have talked a great deal in this podcast about the coming Rapture, the Tribulation, the Great Tribulation, and the Second Coming of our Lord Jesus. Revelation 6 details that Jesus will take the scroll and loose its seven seals to begin the progressive unleashing of the wrath of God upon all the earth during the Tribulation. John 3:36 says that wrath shall abide on him that does not believe in the Son of God.
Revelation 21:8 lists the unbelieving among those who will be cast into the lake of fire and brimstone.
Closing
In closing then, if you are struggling with your faith, snap out of it. Just make up your mind today that nothing will separate you from the truth of God’s word, and the love of God’s word.
In saying this, I am not making light of your circumstance because I know that many walk in difficult ways, painful ways. I lift you in prayer right now that the God of all comfort would have mercy on you and lift your burdens for you. The Apostle Paul tells us that our present sufferings cannot compare to the glory that will be revealed in us. And I say that our present sufferings do not compare to the suffering that will be felt by unbelievers when the wrath of God is released in the Great Tribulation. You do not want to be there for that.
I exhort you today – do not allow the spirit of unbelief in, even for a minute. Do not allow an evil heart of unbelief to develop in you. Do not depart the living God. Do not become hardened of heart by the deceitfulness of sin and the spirit of unbelief.
If you are struggling with your faith, I encourage you to cry out to Jesus, who will help you overcome the spirit of unbelief. In the Gospel according to Mark, Jesus helped a man struggling with unbelief. The man’s son was demon-possessed, and after the father admitted to Jesus his faith struggle, the Lord gave him his miracle.
Mark 9:
23 Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.”
24 Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!”
25 When Jesus saw that the people came running together, He rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “Deaf and dumb spirit, I command you, come out of him and enter him no more!”
26 Then the spirit cried out, convulsed him greatly, and came out of him. And he became as one dead, so that many said, “He is dead.”
27 But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose.
Let us pray.
Father God, thank You for this word about the evil spirit of unbelief. Strengthen our faith by Your Holy Spirit. Lord, please uplift our faith and give us the full armor of God to defeat the flaming missiles of the devil, who wants to trample us in our difficulties. We submit ourselves to You and we rebuke the evil spirit of unbelief. We pray for those who struggle with their faith in these troubled days. Draw them by Your Spirit that they would receive Jesus in their hearts. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.
If anyone has not yet received the Lord Jesus Christ in their heart, and desires to do so, please repeat this prayer after me:
Father God, I repent of my sin and ask for forgiveness today. I confess and declare with my mouth that Jesus is Lord, and I believe with all my heart that You raised Him from the dead for the forgiveness of sins. Jesus, please come into my heart and change me. Send the Holy Spirit to guide and direct me in wisdom and to enable me to overcome temptation from this day forth. Thank You for my salvation. I look forward to the day of the Rapture when I can be with You forever. Amen.
